About
THE HISTORY
Conventional wisdom has us believe that 13 is an unlucky number. But as Ray Mithun, co-founder of Campbell Mithun, once said, “If thirteen is unlucky for some people, it must be lucky for someone else.”
In 2006 Campbell Mithun created the Lucky 13 program to honor Ray Mithun’s sentiment of courage, perspective, and opportunity. Since then, more than sixty bright young advertising minds from all over the country have helped prove just how lucky the number 13 can be.
THE JOB
The Lucky 13 internship is far from the typical intern experience. Interns do real work for real clients, and experience agency life on a face-to-face level (no coffee-fetching or busy-work). As one past intern put it: “Lucky 13 truly is an advertising boot-camp.”
Interns participate in a 10-week paid internship at Campbell Mithun in downtown Minneapolis, and work in one of five disciplines of their choosing: account planning, account management, creative, media, or technology.
THE TESTIMONY
Since its inception in 2006, 64 individuals have called themselves Lucky 13 interns. They come from a wide variety of cities, lifestyles and backgrounds, including as far away as Norway and Poland.
The application process has never been conventional, but in 2011 Campbell Mithun broke the mold by implementing a Twitter-based process, asking the Lucky 13 applicants to submit thirteen tweets over thirteen days for a chance at an interview. You can see some of the results here.
Don’t take our word for it though! Listen to the testimonials of some former Lucky 13 interns here, read the blog post by 2011 intern Vince Koci (now a copywriter) or check out Campbell Mithun’s Lucky Stars: past Lucky 13 interns who are now contributing members of the agency!
THE AGENCY
Campbell Mithun was founded in 1933, and has since built a reputation as an advertising agency that is completely dedicated to client success, in large part by staying close to Ray Mithun’s personal philososphy: making Everything Talk at each point of customer contact.
For all of its 78 years, Campbell Mithun has sought out young pioneers in advertising, a fact reflected in the Lucky 13 internship program.
